Soho House Museum, Birmingham

Soho House Museum.

During 2012, I worked as a visitor assistant at Soho House Museum, the former home of the great Birmingham industrialist and entrepreneur Matthew Boulton (1728-1809).

I was involved in devising outreach activities which highlight Boulton's founder membership of the Lunar Society, a group of great entrepreneurs and 'natural philosophers' including Joseph Priestley, James Watt, Josiah Wedgwood and Erasmus Darwin, who met regularly at Soho House around the dining room table which still survives there. Their collective work touched on almost every area of science and nature, and made great strides in the Enlightenment, the Industrial Revolution and the foundations of modern science and medicine.

I was responsible for various duties, and continually learned more about the site and its importance. I enjoyed passing this on to visitors and enhancing their time at Soho. I also assisted with securing the house and collections, answered queries, and ran the reception desk and shop, selling admission tickets and taking phonecalls.
